How Long Should I use My Vitamins

Today is a simple blog entry that can help you understand the duration of how long you should stay on supplements.  This is strictly my opinion and I was reminded earlier today from a customer that many people would like to know how long to stay on certain nutritional supplements.

STAY ON INDEFINATLEY

Vitamins and minerals can be taken ongoing, our body requires these nutrients for proper health.  This includes multivitamins, I don't believe there is a benefit to mixing brands for any health reasons.  I believe you should take great quality vitamins and minerals and only switch as a reason of personal preference and not because it could but your health in jeopardy.

USE FOR 2-3 MONTHS AND TAKE 1 WEEK OFF

When it comes to herbal supplements a good rule of thumb is to use them for 8 -12 weeks and take a break for a week.  The main reason is so you don't build up a tolerance to the effect of the herbs you are using.  There may be some exceptions to this rule, herbs like licorice can raise blood pressure taken lone term so proceeded with caution.  Most common herbs found on Canadian health food store shelves can be taken 2-3 months without issue.

USE FOR 7 DAYS

Any supplements that immediately boosts clarity, focus and energy should be taken for no longer than 7 days without taking a 1-2 day break.
Pre-workouts, ephedrine and anything that immediately stimulates you must be used with a little more caution by using them short term.  On the opposite side of things anything that relaxes you like melatonin, tryptophan and gaba should also be used short term and then take a one to two day break.


There are many myths about supplements, mixing them up, taking them in strange cycles and needing to use them in conjunction with other nutritional supplements.  Many theories are completely that theories.  Do your research and always go with the majority opinions as oppose to forging sounding supplement routines.
